The UST men's golf team recently competed in the Oklahoma Baptist University Spring Invitational held at Shawnee Country Club in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The field consisted of six teams and eight individuals: Oklahoma Baptist University, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Rocky Mountain College, Oklahoma Panhandle State, and NAIA golf powerhouse Oklahoma City University
Day one started out great for Connor Caldwell (FR/Waco, Texas), who shot a tournament leading 73 on a very windy day. Following Caldwell were Peter Thorseth (FR/Richmond, Texas) with a 79, Tyler Talley (SO/Deer Park, Texas) turned in 81, Jordan Kleinecke (FR/Texas City, Texas) shot 83, and Carlo Surace (SR/Brisbane, Australia) followed with an 85 to round out the days scoring. This left the team in 5th place with a score of 316. Oklahoma Baptist shot a 301 to lead the team event.
Day two had a cool and overcast start to it with favorable wind conditions. Despite the better scoring conditions, the golfer's just couldn't get enough putts to drop on the fast bent grass greens. Surace led the team the 2nd day with a 76 (T24), Talley played better, shooting a 78 (20th), Thorseth shot 81 (T21), Kleinecke had another 83 (30th), and Caldwell struggled home with an 84 (T16), and the linksters finished with a team score of 318 to finish in 6th place.
The team will be back in action April 24-25 at the Red River Athletic Conference Golf championship in San Antonio. The tournament site is Olympia Hills Golf Course and will be hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University. The format will be 54 holes of stroke play, 36 Monday, 18 Tuesday. Play will begin at 8am each day. Spectators are welcome.
