Coach Todd Smith came to the University of St. Thomas in 2008 to lead the Athletics Department and build the men’s basketball program. During the last five years, Coach Smith has made quite an imprint on athletics, basketball and the UST community. Since his arrival, St. Thomas has grown from three athletic teams to six and will add women’s soccer in 2014-15. In 2008-09, St. Thomas had 42 student-athletes on campus; in 2014-15 the athletics department will support more than 100 student athletes. As the athletic department has grown, so has the success of the men’s basketball team.
On the hardwood, the Celts have improved every season, culminating last year when the team finished a program’s best 28-6. The 2012-13 season was memorable as St. Thomas finished 2nd in the Red River Athletic Conference regular season and then won the RRAC Post season tourney when the team defeated RRAC regular season champion SAGU 67-51 on its home floor. The basketball campaign came to an abrupt end when UST lost in the opening round of the National Tournament, to eventual national champions, Georgetown College, 70-68.
After a 4-year playing career at Valparaiso University and 18 years as an assistant coach at Rice, Coach Smith had the opportunity to lead his own program. In his four years at UST, Smith has a career record of 69-48. Smith resides in Pearland, Texas, with his wife Ketti and four children: Turner, 20; Tate, 17; Jace, 14; and Sadie, 12.
